How to Play Pool, with Gareth Potts, 4 times World Champion. In this edition Gareth explains how to play an off-set plant shot.
Video Transcription:
Gareth Potts: This is how to play what we call an offsetting plant.
Especially, plants are really, really tough to play anyway
but when there's a big distance between the balls like this,
it's hard to judge where to, obviously, hit the front one on to
the second one to then pot the second one. So what I do is I
forgot that this ball is here and I just pick a spot on the
cushion with the first ball. So, forget the second ball is here
and then pick a spot on the cushion which is roughly there and I
know if I hit the ball onto that spot that ball is going to get
cut into the corner. Hopefully something like this.
Andy: So the way that I would enter it is if I was playing it,
that's the cue ball.
Gareth Potts: Yup.
Andy: And to hit that ball in I'm going to have to hit the cue
ball to hit there.
Gareth Potts: Yeah.
Andy: So therefore I try to get that cue ball to hit that ball
through there. I'd kinda line it up with my cue first.
Gareth Potts: Yeah, that's correct.
Andy: Is that another way of looking at it?
Gareth Potts: That is another way of looking at it. But the problem you
have when you play that is when you get down to play the shot
it's easy to lose the line of what you've picked.
Andy: Right.
Gareth Potts: So yeah, in theory what you're saying is right. You pick
this ball, that's why you pick the spot on the cushion. And
then, am I aware where the other balls are. Which you pick the
spot on the cushion for the first ball to hit. As long as that
ball hits the spot it's going to cut the ball into the corner.
Andy: Right.
Gareth Potts: And when you go back to addressing the shot, make you're
things right to get down and lock in the leg. It's easy to lose
the line of the commute worked out your way where I know I've
got the spot on that cushion. I just get down, hit the spot,
nothing could move. This method is just aim at where the ball
is going. I know that that rail leads to it. So then I just
get down, forget down the second rail is there, and just hit
that one where I picked.
