Pool Tables start as small as 4ft for the most basic model and go up to 9.5ft for the top of the range table. The measurements quoted for English pool tables refers to the external length of the table, whereas for American pool tables this measurement can refer to either the external length, the playing surface, or even the length of the slate bed. It is therefore worth carefully checking each individual table size to ensure you select the right one. As a general rule the width is half the length of the playing surface.
In terms of table size you therefore need to add the width of the rails to get the total dimensions. To see the dimensions of any table you are considering click on the "Dimensions" tab in the product listing page.
Take the length of the cue you plan to use and allow the use of this length either side of the table. So for example if it is a 6ft table with a standard 52" cue then you need to allow a total of 72" for the table plus 110" for the cue either side making 182" total. In other words 15" long would be the minimum you should allow, ideally 16ft for easy cueing. Using the same method the width is 3ft plus 110" making it 140" (or 12ft) that you should allow.
Most English pub tables will be 7ft in size, these are the ones used in League matches. Some pubs though will use 6ft tables where space is at a premium.
American Pool Tables are normally 8ft in size. But these are available in both 7ft and 9ft as well.
Our advice is to go for the largest you can accommodate and afford.
You can always allow for opening double doors between lounge and dining room for example, or doors onto the patio (weather allowing!).
You could always replace your existing dining table with a pool dining table which will allow you to get twice the useage from your dining room.
